Sandstone buttes rising over the red desert floor

Overview

Three days, one valley, and light that changes its mind every twenty minutes. This expedition was about patience: arriving before dawn, waiting through flat midday glare, and being ready when the late sun set the sandstone on fire. The valley rewards photographers who stand still.

The challenge was scale — nothing in the frame tells you how enormous these formations are. I anchored every composition with foreground detail: scrub, cracked earth, a distant ridge, so the buttes could tower the way they do in person.

Approach

I scout on foot first and shoot second. Each evening I walked the next morning's viewpoint without a camera, memorising where the sun would break and how shadows would fall. That discipline meant every sunrise counted — twelve frames a morning, each one deliberate, instead of hundreds of hopeful guesses.

"The valley print hangs in our lobby and guests ask about it every single week."
