Amber at Golden Hour

Hudson Valley, New York · 2026 · Portrait session

Close golden-hour portrait of Amber in a striped shirt

Overview

Amber wanted portraits that felt like herself on a good day — no stiff posing, no heavy retouching, just warmth. We met an hour before sunset in an open meadow and let the low sun do most of the talking, working through laughter, quiet moments, and the breeze until the light turned to honey.

The challenge was the shifting light: shining one minute, gone behind cloud the next. I kept Amber moving through a small loop of positions so we always had a flattering angle ready, and exposed for the highlights to keep her skin luminous while the background melted into soft green and gold.

Approach

My portrait sessions run on conversation, not direction. I give small, physical prompts — "walk toward me slowly", "look past my shoulder" — and photograph the in-between seconds where real expression lives. Amber's session produced over two hundred keepers; the final gallery of forty images moves from bright and playful to quiet and cinematic as the sun drops.

"I have never liked photos of myself until now. Juno caught the version of me my friends actually know."
